How to travel by land from Yaoundé to Brazzaville

This is our first article in English, and we’ve decided to write it because it’s so difficult to find information about the journey between Yaoundé (Cameroon) and Brazzaville (Congo). It took 3 days by road, and we did this trip on April 24th, 25th and 26th.

DAY 1: Yaoundé – Ntam (Cameroon border)

In Yaoundé, we took a van of Rapido Voyages (3.500 XAF per person) to Djoum. The company is in front of Santa Lucia, at Mvan (it’s a little difficult to find). We arrived there at 7:15 a.m. and left at 9:40 a.m —we need to wait until is fool, as it’s common in this region. We arrived at Djoum at 2 p.m.

There, we had to do a tough negotiation to get a taxi to Ntam. Originally, it was 10.000 XAF per person, we managed to pay 9.000 XAF, but we still had to wait quite a bit. We left at 4:20 p.m. and arrived at 7:20 p.m.

On the road, some cops stops, as usual. At one, the guy asked 5.000 XAF per person, but I said that we didn’t pay this fee before and he just accepted this. At the next one, the guy asked to look inside my backpack and asked 3 times if I had cocaine. “Are you sure?”. Luckily, he didn’t put anything in my backpack.

On Ntam, we stayed at Hotel Ambassade, a simple place (3.000 XAF the bedroom with a bed and mosquito net; at the bathroom, outside, it was bucket shower and bucket flush).

DAY 2: Ntam – Ouésso

We walked less than 1 km to the Cameroon border. The guys were so nice and didn’t ask bribe. There, an officer got a taxi for us.

The Congo border (2 km) is also easy, and you have to go to 4 offices. No bribes asked.

There are some taxis, but no passengers. As it’s 15.000 XAF per person, they asked us 90.000 XAF to complete the car. We didn’t accept this and left (15.000 XAF by person) with the guy from the Cameroon border, and he completed the car in the first city. We left at 9:15 a.m. and arrived at Ouésso at 2 p.m.

We traveled by this car between the Congo border and Ouésso

There, we bought the ticket to the bus (Ocean du Nord) for the next day and stayed at Hotel Onanga. It’s 40.000 XAF, but we negotiated to 30.000 XAF, without breakfast. It’s a good hotel with good restaurant, but in our room the outlets, Wi-Fi, TV and AC control didn’t work.

DAY 3: Ouésso – Brazzaville

We arrived at the bus station (Ocean du Nord) at 5:30 a.m. and left at 6:40 a.m (only 20 minutes late). It’s 10.000 XAF per person. We arrived in Brazzaville at 8 p.m.

There are some cops stops and we had to be registered. They didn’t ask bribes from us, just from people from others African countries.

In Brazzaville, we stayed at Résidence Hôtelière de Moungali (21.500 XAF with reservations made via Booking.com).
